Random Thoughts 2011
Dec.
19, 2011 - Picked up another copy of
the
Tokina 12-24mm f/4 to compare it head to
head with the
Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8. Debating which I find
more useful, the extra reach of the 12-24mm or
the extra stop of the 11-16mm.
Dec.
13, 2011 - Added a bunch of prices to
the Sigma used lens price guide. I really need
to update all the price guides more often. It's
so time consuming though.
Still considering adding Sony and Pentax guides,
plus guides for the mirrorless systems.
Dec.
09, 2011 - Tamron announced the
18-200mm F/3.5-6.3 DI III VC lens for Sony's
NEX system. It's the first autofocus third party
lens for a mirrorless system. I guess Sigma and
maybe also Tokina won't be far behind with
lenses for mirrorless cameras. The NEX lenses
are just too big though, negating the smaller
size advantage of the cameras.
Nov.
30, 2011 - The new Nikon SB-910
Speedlight doesn't seem like much of an upgrade
from the SB-900. If/when my SB-800 dies I'll
probably get the SB-700.
Nov. 28, 2011 - Haven't experienced
the white dot syndrome that other Fuji X10 users
are complaining about. I'll be doing some
extensive testing tomorrow to see if I can
duplicate the problem.
Nov.
27, 2011 - Have three lens reviews
that need to get written, plus two more lenses
on the way for testing.
Nov.
21, 2011 - I really need to update my
image gallery. I can't remember the last time I
added anything new. The
rumored specs and images of the Nikon D800 look
very interesting. Still hoping Nikon will
release a full frame camera I can afford. Some
people are speculating the D400 will be full
frame but I'm guessing the MSRP will be about
$2400 regardless of the sensor.
Nov.
17, 2011 - Just got my
Capture Camera Clip Extender. Can't wait to
try it out.
Nov.
16, 2011 - Still playing with my Fuji
X10. Hopefully I'll have the review up tomorrow.
Nov.
10, 2011 - Nikon released
firmware upgrade v.1.03 for the D7000. I
don't think I'll bother with it. I haven't experienced
any of the bugs it supposedly fixes.
Nov.
08, 2011 - Chose the Fuji X10 as my
carry around camera. Hope it was the right
choice. A review with the reasons for my decison
will be posted in a few days.
Nov.
06, 2011 - Still thinking about what
carry around camera to get. I'm 80% sure I know what
I want. Ruled out the Canon S100, Nikon 1 system
( V1 and J1 ), and all other mirrorless cameras.
Oct.
28, 2011 - The more I see and read
about Nikon's mirrorless system the more
impressed I am with it. But the price is a deal
breaker for me. I'm just not willing to pay that
much for a camera and lens I won't be using very
often. Hopefully the next gen will be cheaper.
Oct.
18th, 2011 - Canon
introduced it's new flagship camera today, the
EOS-1D X. Looks like it
will be a really nice pro camera. Canon is
billing it as "The Camera with Three Brains".
With over 35 buttons and knobs on the
camera you may need three brains to figure out
how to work it. MSRP is $6400.
Oct. 5th, 2011 - Yesterday Sigma
announced an updated lens, the 18-200mm
f3.5-6.3 II DC OS HSM. It's smaller and lighter
than the original and has FLD and SLD glass. I'm
wondering why Sigma chose to update this lens
instead of the 18-250mm. Maybe that one will be
next.
Sept. 21, 2011 - Nikon announced it's
mirrorless system today, the
Nikon 1 and introduced two cameras, the
V1 and J1, each with 10mp sensors, with a
2.7x crop called CX format. Nikon also announced
four Nikkor 1 lenses for the new system. I'm
a little disappointed, not so much for what
Nikon is offering (it's what I pretty much
expected), but for the prices Nikon has set.
MSRP for the J1 with kit lens is $649.95 while
the V1 with kit lens is $899.95. I was hoping
they would be half that. Still debating whether
I should get a compact or mirrorless camera as a
carry around. For now though I still like my
Nikon D50 with the 35mm f/1.8 DX lens.
